ISQ are a critically-acclaimed post-jazz/alternative quartet from London featuring Irene Serra (vocals - Wynton Marsalis, Norma Winstone, US3), Richard Sadler (double bass - founding member of the Neil Cowley Trio), Naadia Sheriff (piano - Yazz Ahmed, Hermeto Pascoal) and Chris Nickolls (drums - Andy Sheppard, Jean Touissant). Described as "EST with vocals", this crossover jazz outfit embrace “the song” as an improvisational framework to move into different – sometimes unexpected - sonic directions and moods.
ISQ will be releasing and touring their much-anticipated third album this Autumn and into early 2020. It is in a live setting that these musicians really show their jazz roots, expanding the framework of the songs and relishing in the musical spontaneity and interplay. Hear them when you get the chance. “...ISQ are a melting pot of genres – jazz, pop, acoustic and experimental – which all blend together to entrancing effect...” - Time Out London Critics Choice “...singer Irene Serra has a strong stage presence and a compelling vocal tone, which she uses to great effect on original songs that defy categorisation…” - JAZZWISE "...Their arrangements draw on jazz, rock and electronic music, using the skills of the band’s individuals to the full, in music which is uniquely theirs…" - London Jazz Youtube: http://youtube.com/isqmusic Website: http://www.isqmusic.com Spotify : http://bit.ly/ISQSPOTIFY Soundcloud : http://www.soundcloud.com/isqmusic Bandcamp : https://isqmusic.bandcamp.com Facebook: @isqmusic - http://www.facebook.com/isqmusic Twitter: @isqmusic - http://www.twitter.com/isqmusic Instagram: @isqmusic - http://www.instagram.com/isqmusic

The Nonet is an ensemble Miguel uses to explore various compositional techniques with specific focus on texture, non-tonal melodic structures, polyrhythms, and the relationships between them all. Influences include Steve Coleman, Steve Lehman, Louis Andriessen, Gerard Grisey, Thelonious Monk, Stravinsky, and many others. The band features many of London’s leading jazz musicians who bring their own personalities to the sound through their unique improvisations.
Gareth Lockrane - Flutes Mike Chillingworth - Alto sax & clarinet George Crowley - Tenor sax & bass clarinet Miguel Gorodi - Trumpet & flugel Kieran McLeod - Trombone Ray Hearne - Tuba Ralph Wyld - Vibes Conor Chaplin - Bass David Hamblett - Drums Miguel Gorodi Nonet – Apophenia (Review by Patrick Hadfield) Trumpeter Miguel Gorodi has put together a biggish band of some of the most interesting musicians on the London jazz scene for this record of his own compositions. Using nine players has allowed him to extend the usual palette of sounds, creating music which is full of texture and depth, as illustrated by the inclusion of Ray Hearne‘s tuba. Gorodi’s arrangements make the most of the musicians. Gareth Lockrane on flutes and Ralph Wyld on vibraphone stand out throughout, as does Connor Chaplin‘s bass. But then there are moments at which each musician excels, and ensemble sections which pack a punch, too. The tension between different instruments and registers builds the excitement, released by the excellent solos throughout the record. The simple, repetitive nature of some of the riffs, such as the openings of both La Nausée and Search, may stem from Gorodi’s rumination on mental health and OCD in particular, but they also serve to wind up the spring, which strains to let go. “Apophenia” is the process of seeing connections and meaning where, perhaps, none exists; the reviewers’ curse, perhaps! Gorodi’s Apophenia might wish us to infer meaning from his use of titles – such as La Nausée, named for Jean-Paul Sartre’s novel, Time Sigmund (Freud, presumably), and Amygdala (a part of the brain); but maybe he’s just playing with us: Not Nicest Memo, fizzes along exuberantly at a cracking pace, the nonet proving they can swing, too. Treppenwitz is the meeting of three musicians: pianist Matthew Aplin (Mansion of Snakes, KOG and the Zongo Brigade), bassist Tom Riviere (Family Band) and drummer/LCoM lecturer Steve Hanley (Jamie Taylor, Svarc Trio, Richard Iles). The central philosophy is that the world of sound is interconnected, and different strains of music represent outgrowths from the same seed. Explorative passages of beauty and space sit comfortably alongside explosive bursts of freedom, held together by the connective tissue of improvisation. Compositions are written by the members, with something open-ended deliberately in mind; the shapes and contours of the music develop organically, different every time, always seeking.
In 2018, they were selected for Jazz North’s Northern line touring support scheme. Subsequently they toured the UK extensively, completing 25 dates in total. Their sophomore album, The Kennedys at Beaver Point, was released by New Jazz Records in January 2019. CDs and digital download available at: www.treppenwitzmusic.bandcamp.com A third album awaits release later in 2019. The repertoire consists entirely of Michael Fleiner’s own compositions in afro Caribbean and Latin jazz styles. It is music for the ears and the legs, for music lovers and dancers alike, performed by three virtuoso wind instrumentalists and a groovy rhythm section.
Michael is always searching in his compositions for interesting ideas from different styles to develop Latin jazz and afro Caribbean music and to give it a personal touch. You can find jazz harmony as well as contemporary rhythm concepts, traditional and modern Latin music, or even ideas from mathematics and physics which gave Michael the nickname “El Matemático del Latin Jazz” (the mathematician from latin jazz) in Latin America. These very different elements are always packed in a hot and spicy Latin groove. The actual CD is titled “Como me gusta el 7" and is a reference to the odd time signatures (7/4 and 5/4) and the unconventional art of Michael’s music writing. It is the 5th CD and was released in 2018. The Septeto Internacional has already been invited to perform in Europe (Spain, France, Italy, Hungary, Switzerland, Austria, Greece, Slovakia) as well as in Latin-America (Mexico, Cuba, Colombia, French Guiana, Suriname) at international Jazz Festivals, Jazz Clubs, Salsa Discos and Folk Festivals. The musicians from the band are very professional and have a great experience. They play and have played with the most famous musicians in Jazz and Latin Jazz: Chucho Valdés, Irakere, Celia Cruz, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Dizzy Gillespie, Pablo Milanés, Paquito D’Rivera, Joe Henderson, Giovanni Hidalgo, Raoul de Sousa, Dave Valentin, Danilo Pérez, Isaac Delgado, Julio Baretto, etc… Last but not least: The trumpeter Juan Munguía played for over 15 years in the legendary Cuban band IRAKERE from Chucho Valdés. So don’t miss the occasion to hear and see this extraordinarily exciting band with excellent musicians coming from different countries. Line-Up: Juan Munguía - CUBA – trumpet & flugelhorn Lolo García - SPAIN - alto saxophone Dudu Penz - BRAZIL - el.-bass Daniel Bagutti - SWITZERLAND - drums Stéphane Joerg “El Niño”- SWITZERLAND - congas Michael Fleiner - SWITZERLAND - piano, compositions & lead Here's a teaser... https://youtu.be/D4Te1aK5N6U https://septeto.net/ Thursday 19th September - John Pearce 'JUST FRIENDS' album tour launch party - £10/5 students5/8/2019 "Immense technical grasp...passionate commitment to everything that he plays." - Venue

“It’s A Man’s World” show is one with the potential to appeal to a wide audience, while retaining enough genuine jazz and blues elements to keep the purists happy…..” The Jazz Mann.
Imagine if Chet Baker, Sarah Vaughan, Stan Getz and Cannonball Adderley were reincarnated in the body of a rural Shropshire girl ….. Imagine no more and meet Becki Biggins! The multi-award-winning singer, songwriter and saxophonist cites Donald Fagen and Michael Brecker as major influences, but her vocal and instrumental roots are from way back. Becki’s first tour as a working musician was to the legendary Mardi Gras in New Orleans where she unsurprisingly fell in love with jazz music and its history. Her new show and forthcoming album, “It’s A Man’s World”, is a celebration of great songs, written, popularised and inspired by good men, performed by a strong, secure woman. Becki’s abilities as a songwriter, (she co-wrote three albums with Paul Hardcastle which all went to No1 in the US Jazz charts) are also put to good use in the show, peppered as it is with her own stories and those she has heard and collected over the years. Joining the wonderful Becki Biggins for this great show are top-flight Bristol musicians John-Paul Gard on organ, Ben Waghorn, saxes & woodwind and Andy Tween on drums. Olly Chalk Trio ft. John O’Gallagher (Scathed Citizens Album Release Tour)
Olly Chalk - piano/compositions John O’Gallagher - alto saxophone Sam Ingvorsen - double bass Gwilym Jones - drums The Olly Chalk Trio walks the high-wire between total freedom and detailed writing, juggling intricate, daring and emotive compositions with explosive improvising. Olly’s writing draws from 20th Century Classical and traditional Japanese music and often make connections to poetry and spoken word. After winning the Peter Whittingham Development Award in January 2018, the trio were joined in the studio by fiery New York saxophonist John O’Gallagher. The music from this new album: ‘Scathed Citizens’ explores a vivid picture-book of themes: science fiction, mysticism, hope, anxiety, dystopia and growing up in the peaceful Suffolk countryside. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUxOAYbcAL4 https://ollychalk.bandcamp.com/album/scathed-citizens https://www.instagram.com/ollychalk/ Gary Alesbrook is highly regarded throughout the musical world, having played with a menagerie of top UK artists whilst simultaneously forging a solo career that consistently produces original material of the very highest calibre. We are lucky at Jazz at Future Inn to call Gary one of our regulars. Tonight he steps in to perform alongside three other Bristol legends; Victoria Klewin, Chris Jones and Anders Olinder.
Victoria Klewin is a versatile young vocalist and songwriter who spent her formative years binging on jazz standards instead of alcopops. It's proven to be time well spent as her delivery is emotive, playful and authentic, with a tone that is both sophisticated, sweet and gritty. "What a voice! Such a fluid, pure and honest sound with the perfect bite to it keeping the music full of energy and excitement." - Jazz FM "Jazz chanteuse Victoria Klewin can swing it like a Saturday night and then slip into a heartbreak blues ballad just as easily." - Venue 2012 "Superbly sultry, powerful and pitch-perfect." - New Brunswick Battle of the Blues |
